SUPERPOSITION – THE RACE FOR QUANTUM COMPUTING

Largely unnoticed by the general public, a technology is emerging that could be even more disruptive than AI: quantum computing. Can Europe succeed, this time, in winning the race for a revolutionary new technology?

Largely unnoticed by the general public, a technological era is emerging in the shadow of AI that could have an even more profound impact on our lives: quantum computing. Quantum computers hold such revolutionary potential that every major player in science, business and politics is racing to develop them. Hailed as technological marvels capable of making unprecedented breakthroughs, they also pose massive risks that could threaten our global security and upend the world order. For now, quantum computers exist only in the laboratory. Yet despite the immense challenges involved in building them, the international race is already well underway. Because whoever masters quantum technology will shape the future. At Forschungszentrum Jülich, the epicentre of European quantum research, four leading scientists are racing to keep pace with rapid developments and push the boundaries of what is possible – not only in research, but also in politics, where old assumptions must be abandoned and new paths charted. Can Europe, this time, win the race for a new revolutionary technology?
