OVERPOPULATION AND FAMILY PLANNING

Global population has more than doubled over the last 50 years. Will global population self-regulate or do we need to intervene – and if so, how?

Seven billion people now live on this planet and the global population has more than doubled over the last 50 years. Is a “human tsunami” imminent? Or is the fear of overpopulation unjustified? Many women in less developed countries can only dream of being liberated from the fear of an unwanted pregnancy. Starting with the example of the Indian state of Bihar, the film looks at the history of family planning policies and reproductive health over the past 50 years and at the United Nations Population Fund’s current work in various countries. Because of cultural differences, the forms of family planning practiced around the world vary widely, just as population growth or decline differs from country to country.
