REBECCA HORN – THE SECRET LIFE OF THINGS

Rebecca Horn is considered one of the most influential German artists of the 20th century. The film explores her poetic, multifaceted and enigmatic body of work, which includes performances, films, site-based installations, sculptures and drawings.

The film explores the multifaceted and expansive body of work of artist Rebecca Horn, widely regarded as one of Germany’s most influential artists of the 20th century. The youngest participant in documenta 5 in 1972, and one of few women to be granted a solo exhibition at New York’s Guggenheim Museum in 1993, Horn established her place in the art world at an early stage. Her cross-disciplinary oeuvre – which includes performances, videos, films, site-specific installations, sculptures, poetry and drawings – is defined by a distinctive, yet never predictable, artistic language. The film examines her work within the context of its time. Rebecca Horn was a pioneer of kinetic sculpture and the first female artist to explore the relationship between the human body and the machine. Poetry, eroticism and the tension between strength and fragility are defining qualities that connect all of her work. The film traces Rebecca Horn’s artistic journey, but also her personal story in postwar Germany, revealing the visionary qualities of her practice. Shortly after filming began, Rebecca Horn died in September 2024, aged 80.
