SUDAN – A HOSPITAL IN THE SHADOW OF WAR

Amid the chaos of the Sudanese civil war, hundreds of thousands have sought refuge in the remote Nuba Mountains. In one of the last functioning hospitals, a surgeon and his team fight to provide medical care.

For decades, the people of Sudan’s Nuba Mountains have lived under the oppression of the Islamist government in the capital, Khartoum. The remote region in the south of the country still has no paved roads, no mobile network – and most critically – almost no access to medical care. One hospital has defied all odds for almost 30 years. However, with the outbreak of civil war in April 2023, the situation has worsened dramatically. The film follows Joseph Yacoub in his daily life as head of the hospital. He is the region’s only surgeon. Hundreds of patients arrive at the hospital each day: pregnant women, wounded fighters, mothers with severely malnourished children. Joseph learned surgery at the operating table – there are no universities in the Nuba Mountains. Now, he is passing his knowledge on to the next generation – to Nidal Difan, who dreams of becoming the region’s first female surgeon, and Aziz Burma, a former soldier. Joseph hopes that one day, they will continue his work. This documentary offers an intimate glimpse into a seemingly endless war that leaves deep scars on those caught in its path. All of them cling to the hope of a future where war is no more than a distant memory.
