AWARE – GLIMPSES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

What is consciousness? Is it in all living beings? Why are we predisposed for mystical experience? AWARE ventures beyond the explicable, exploring questions both scientific and spiritual.

After centuries of virtual silence, there has been an explosion of research into consciousness. Scientists are confronting the “Big Questions”, opening up a realm once dominated by philosophy and religion. We follow six brilliant researchers as they approach consciousness from radically different perspectives: through high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances, and by investigating consciousness in plants. AWARE begins as a science film but then ventures beyond the explicable. While the origins of consciousness may well be unfathomable, their study can obscure an equally mysterious question: Why do we seem to be hardwired for mystical experience? What possible evolutionary function could this serve? AWARE ultimately leads us on a voyage across the sea of consciousness, reflected in cinematographic imagery that reveals the interconnectedness of nature – from the smallest organisms to the vast cosmos. It invites us to experience awe as the researchers do, to dive in with them and emerge again to see the world anew as we revise long-held beliefs and assumptions and embark on our own odyssey – Ultimately, to be aware we are aware.
